5 SEO quick wins for local businesses
Five concrete levers you can pull this week to make your local business more visible in search. No agency budget required.
Local visibility decides whether a nearby customer finds you or scrolls to page two. The good news: most levers are free and can be pulled in an afternoon.
1. Fill out your Google Business Profile to the last line
Keep address, phone, opening hours, and category accurate. Identical spelling to your website — otherwise Google devalues the match. Upload at least five photos (logo, exterior, team) and reply to reviews within 48 hours.
2. Add LocalBusiness schema
A few lines of JSON-LD in the <head> are enough for Google to parse your industry, hours, and region:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LocalBusiness",
"name": "Your business",
"telephone": "+49 ...",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "Sample Street 1",
"postalCode": "74523",
"addressLocality": "Schwäbisch Hall",
"addressCountry": "DE"
}
}
</script>
Validate with the Rich Results Test.
3. Fix your Core Web Vitals
Three numbers matter: LCP < 2.5 s, CLS < 0.1, INP < 200 ms. The most common quick wins:
- Serve the hero image via
srcsetand tag it withloading="eager"+fetchpriority="high" - Use
font-display: swapfor web fonts and preload your primary font - Avoid layout shifts: always render images and embeds with explicit
width/height - Defer third-party scripts (analytics, chat) until consent or idle
4. Per-page title and meta description
One domain, one title hierarchy. City + service + brand wins in local SERPs:
Tax advisors Schwäbisch Hall – Müller & Partners
Description: 140–160 characters, one concrete CTA, ideally a number (price, response time, experience).
5. Real content over stock photos
A custom photo series of your team, your location, a specific project beats any stock image. Google recognises unique imagery, and so do users. Bonus: serve images with descriptive alt attributes and meaningful file names.
Frequently asked questions
Google Business Profile or website – which matters more for local ranking? Both, but differently: the profile largely drives your spot in the local “map pack”, the website drives your ranking in the classic results. They reinforce each other – provided the data is consistent on both. Maintain only one and you forfeit half your local visibility.
Do I need a separate landing page for every nearby town? Only where you have genuine relevance (a location, projects, a contact). A distinct, substantial page per city can rank locally; thin, near-identical “doorway” pages for ten neighbouring towns get penalised. Prefer a few strong pages over many empty ones.
How important are reviews for local visibility? Very. Count, recency and review text feed into local ranking – and they decide whether someone clicks. Actively ask satisfied customers for a review, and reply to every one, including critical ones, within a day or two.
My competitor ranks higher with a worse website – why? Locally, three factors count: proximity to the searcher, relevance, and prominence (reviews, mentions, listings). A well-kept, older Google profile with many reviews often beats a prettier but unknown website. That’s exactly what the five quick wins address.
